I will now hand it over to Superintendent Nyland for tonight's recognition.
Tonight we have the privilege of recognizing our board of directors.
The board of directors as they're finding out put in incredible amounts of time.
I think some of them are here almost all day, many days of the week.
I'd like to read a proclamation by Governor Jay Inslee and then we'll invite the board members down front.
I'll try.
Thank you.
Alright I want to read a proclamation from Governor Jay Inslee and then we will invite board members down front to have a photo with some flowers and a certificate from the state school directors association.
The governor's proclamation, whereas the mission of Washington's public school system is to assure that all students achieve at high levels, whereas Washington's 295 locally elected school boards are the core of the public education governance system.
Whereas, our district and schools serve more than 1 million students in a combined budget of nearly $11 billion.
Whereas, school directors play a crucial role in promoting student learning and achievement, establishing policies and budgets, and setting clear standards for accountability.
Whereas, school directors are a vital link between members of the community and their schools.
Whereas, school directors provide a passionate voice for advocacy for the public schools and welfare of schoolchildren.
Whereas it's appropriate to recognize school directors as outstanding volunteers and champions for public education.
Now therefore Jay Inslee as governor of the state of Washington do hereby proclaim January 2016 as school board recognition month.
So I congratulate our hardworking board of directors.
I'll invite you down front and we have a certificate and flowers for you.
I want to be on the high rise.
Now we are going to go into our student presentations.
We want to welcome to West Seattle High School's link program and their advisor Laura McCarthy.
Ms. McCarthy will introduce their group in tonight's presentation.
Directors please step down to the podium for the interaction portion of this presentation.
you can wait for a moment if you want but we are going to ask you to come down in just a second.
My name is Laura McCarthy and I coordinate our Link Crew program at West Seattle High School and in a nutshell Link Crew is designed to train juniors and seniors to act as mentors for our incoming ninth graders to get them off to a good start their first year of high school and it begins with a student-led freshman orientation the very first day of school.
So I'm going to hand the microphone over to some fabulous link leaders and they're going to give you a bit more of an idea of what they do.
Hi everyone.
My name is Olivia.
I am a senior at West Seattle High School.
I am also a link leader and I am involved with West Seattle High School Cheer and I've been on the team for four years.
Hi, I'm Annalise, I'm also a senior at West Seattle High School.
I'm a part of many different things other than Link Crew.
I am a part of band, I play clarinet to be exact.
I'm a part of the drama department.
I have been head tech backstage for three years now.
I've been a part of NHS, which is National Honor Society, just in case you didn't know, and also Key Club, so yeah.
Hi I'm Meredith and I am a senior here at West Seattle High School and this is my second year of Link Crew.
Aside from Link Crew I am in Key Club, I am in the Drama Club, I am in this year's musical.
Outside of school I have been playing guitar for six years and I have been working on a book and I have a job which is challenging.
So here is Olivia and Annalise for you guys to participate in a game.
Okay so this is where we're going to ask you guys to come on down.
We're going to ask you to get into a circle and we're going to do a little activity that we like to do on the first day of school.
So this activity is called count off and so we're going to have you guys stand shoulder to shoulder and there's only a few really simple rules.
One of our rules is that we're going to try and count to 20. So, we're going to go one by one, but there can be no strategy used.
You can't say the same number as somebody else at the same time.
Everyone has to say one number, and nobody can say more than three.
Nineteen.
One.
Two.
Three.
Four.
Five.
Okay, that's okay.
We can start over.
Let's go.
